Armstrong Park & Cultural District Seeks Official Recognition from the Texas Commission on the Arts

DUNCANVILLE, TX – The City of Duncanville is proud to announce its effort to secure official designation of Armstrong Park & Cultural District as a cultural district by the Texas Commission on the Arts. This prestigious recognition would celebrate the 21-acre parkland’s legacy as a center for creativity, cultural expression, and community connection for over 50 years while elevating its role as a vital cultural hub for the region.

“Armstrong Park & Cultural District is more than just a beautiful stretch of rolling parkland—it’s the heart and soul of Duncanville,” said Mayor Greg Contreras. “For over half a century, it has served as the backdrop for countless events that define who we are as a community. This effort to gain cultural district recognition honors that legacy and ensures its vibrancy for generations to come.”

“Armstrong Park & Cultural District has been a cultural district in Duncanville before there was a word for it,” said Ron Thompson, Chair of the Arts Commission. “This designation is not about creating something new—it’s about honoring what has always been here and expanding opportunities for arts, culture, and creativity to thrive.”

Bart Stevenson, Director of Parks and Recreation, highlighted the park’s historical and emotional significance. “Armstrong Park & Cultural District is more than a park. It’s been the center of the community for celebrations, cultural experiences, and a creative touchstone for generations of residents,” he said.

The pursuit of cultural district designation has also ignited a sense of unity across Duncanville, bringing city stakeholders together in unprecedented ways. DeMonica Gooden, an at-large member of the City Council and the Council Liaison to the Arts Commission, noted the initiative’s impact.
