What the Advisory Board Does

The Advisory Board of the Armstrong Park Cultural District Foundation provides expert guidance and strategic counsel to support the Foundation’s mission to make Armstrong Park Cultural District a regional cultural destination. The Advisory Board plays a vital role in shaping the Foundation’s long-term strategy and ensuring that its arts programming, cultural initiatives, and partnerships reflect the needs and interests of the community.

Key Functions:

  • Provide strategic input on arts programming, funding strategies, and cultural development.

  • Offer insight into regional and national arts and cultural trends.

  • Act as ambassadors for Armstrong Park Cultural District, increasing public awareness and engagement.

  • Build relationships with donors, sponsors, and strategic partners.

  • Recommend potential partnerships and programming opportunities to the Foundation’s Board of Directors.

  • Ensure that the Foundation’s work reflects the diversity and cultural identity of Duncanville and the Armstrong Park Cultural District.

How Members Are Selected

Advisory Board members are appointed based on their expertise, leadership, and commitment to supporting the Armstrong Park Cultural District’s success.

Selection Process:

  1. Nomination:

    • Nominations may be submitted by the Executive Director, Board of Directors, or current Advisory Board members.

    • Prospective members may also self-nominate.

  2. Review:

    • Nominations are reviewed by the Board of Directors based on qualifications and alignment with the Foundation’s mission.

    • Final candidates are evaluated based on their experience, expertise, and potential to contribute to the Advisory Board’s effectiveness.

  3. Appointment:

    • New members are appointed by a majority vote of the Board of Directors.

    • Appointments are confirmed annually at the first Board of Directors meeting of the fiscal year (October 1 – September 30).

Qualifications

The Advisory Board is composed of leaders in the arts, cultural industries, business, and community development. Ideal candidates will have:

Professional Expertise:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in one or more of the following fields:

    • Visual arts

    • Performing arts (theater, music, dance)

    • Literary arts

    • Film and media

    • Arts education

    • Community-based and participatory arts

    • Economic development and placemaking

    • Grantmaking & Funding

    • Corporate & Political Leadership

Strategic and Leadership Experience:

  • Experience in board service, nonprofit governance, or senior leadership in the arts or business.

  • Proven ability to develop and implement strategic initiatives.

  • Strong understanding of the intersection between arts and economic development.

Community Engagement and Advocacy:

  • Deep understanding of the Duncanville community and Armstrong Park Cultural District.

  • Commitment to promoting cultural diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Experience in building partnerships and fostering collaboration within the arts sector.

Commitment:

  • Willingness to serve a three-year term (with the option to renew for an additional term).

  • Ability to attend quarterly Advisory Board meetings and actively participate in the Foundation’s activities.

Responsibilities

Advisory Board members serve in a non-governing capacity and are not responsible for operational decisions. However, they play a critical role in shaping the Foundation’s strategy and community presence.

Advisory Role:

  • Provide input on the Foundation’s strategic plan and funding priorities.

  • Offer recommendations for arts programming and community engagement.

  • Identify opportunities for partnerships with local and regional arts organizations.

  • Act as a sounding board for the Executive Director and Board of Directors on policy and program development.

Community Engagement:

  • Act as ambassadors for Armstrong Park Cultural District.

  • Promote the Foundation’s work through public speaking, media outreach, and personal networks.

  • Participate in Foundation-sponsored events and fundraising activities.

  • Help build relationships with potential donors, sponsors, and arts partners.

Fundraising and Advocacy:

  • Encourage philanthropic support for the Foundation’s programs and initiatives.

  • Facilitate introductions to potential funders, strategic partners, and community leaders.

  • Provide insight on grant opportunities, funding strategies, and potential revenue sources.

Ethics and Conduct:

  • Maintain confidentiality regarding all Foundation matters.

  • Avoid conflicts of interest and disclose any potential conflicts.

  • Uphold the Foundation’s mission, values, and commitment to transparency.

Meeting and Participation Requirements

  • Advisory Board members are expected to attend quarterly meetings (4 times per year).

  • Members are expected to actively engage with the Foundation’s leadership and provide timely input on strategic decisions.

  • Participation in Foundation events, such as public art unveilings, performances, and fundraisers, is encouraged.
